Many loving, intelligent, well-meaning parents are determined to provide their young child with the knowledge and skills he needs to excel in the world of today. Unfortunately, what they fail to realize is that he is going to be spending the bulk of his life living in the world of tomorrow, not the world of today.
Think about how rapidly technology is advancing. By the time your child is in third or fourth grade, most of what we are using today will be totally obsolete. Filling his head with specifics about the current systems will be no more valuable to him in the future than knowing how to use a slide rule.
What is a slide rule? Well, back in the old days, when scientists, engineers, and mathematicians had to calculate really big numbers – such as 902,706 times 387,541 – they took out their trusty slide rule. It was like three rulers stuck together with the middle one sliding back and forth, and there was a piece with a line on it…I don’t know. All I do know is that I was not permitted to graduate from college until I passed the slide rule test.
I spent many months learning to use the darn thing and finally got enough of it that I could barely pass the test. I swear it was less than a year later the first calculators came out. Now I can’t remember the names of all my grandchildren because I have all this slide rule stuff stuck in my head doing me absolutely no good whatsoever.
So keep in mind that when your child spends his time and energy pursuing the fun, fascinating, free-form activities like you find in Romp n’ Roll classes, he is developing the broad concepts and general skills that will make him a highly efficient and effective learner capable of picking up anything quickly and easily in the future. He may not be acquiring the particulars necessary to be successful in the world of today, but he is definitely getting precisely what he needs to be successful in the world of tomorrow.
