“Has she started talking yet?” How often are the parents of an infant asked that question? After all, the emergence of the first words is a biggie in putting together a picture of a child’s developmental progress, so it is inevitable that everyone will be focused on that vocal event.
其实这不是什么大事儿，从宝宝说出第一个字开始，开启表达性语言进程的时间从6个月一直持续到2岁。有些孩子语言发育很早，会在6到7个月时说出第一个字。但另一些孩子会在2岁左右才开始说出第一个字，但这并不意味着他们的语言发育和能力逊于前者。
Well, the reality is that it really isn’t such a big deal. The normal range for the onset of expressive language, when children say their first words, is enormous – from six months all the way up until 24 months. Some children who are developing beautifully and will eventually have superb language skills do say their first words as early as six or seven months. But a lot of children who are developing beautifully and will eventually have superb language skills don’t say much of anything until sometime around the second birthday.
另一方面，启动接受性语言发育，也就是他们理解第一个字的时间，通常集中在6-8个月。而且，表达性语言发育一旦开启，通常不稳定，能力时好时坏，而接受性语言能力却一直稳定的发展。当8个月时，宝宝们已经理解一部分字和词了，比如“妈妈”“瓶子”“挥手再见”等。当1岁时，他们会理解近40个字，当2岁时，就会懂得200多个字的意思了，当3岁时，宝宝们将能理解在他们今后人生中常用的3/4的日常用语。
On the other hand, the normal range for the onset of receptive language, when children understand their first words, is extremely narrow – six to eight months. Furthermore, while expressive language, once it does start, usually proceeds in a herky-jerky fashion, receptive language proceeds very steadily. By eight months of age, the child typically understands a few words and phrases, such as “Mama,” “bottle,” “wave bye-bye,” etc. By a year of age, she will understand two or three dozen words; by two years of age, a couple of hundred words; and by the age of three she will understand about three-quarters of all the everyday language she will use for the rest of her life.
所以，如果你邻居的宝宝比你的孩子提前说话，提前1、2个月甚至好几个月，这都用不着担心。只要你心里有数，在人生之初的那一年里，宝宝们懂得的字要比他们会说的多很多。只要你的宝宝理解能力顺利发展，你对他们语言发育的进程就尽可放心。
So if your neighbor’s baby started talking a month or two or several months before yours, don’t worry about it. Keep in mind that during the first years of life, children always can understand a lot more than they can say. And as long as your little one’s comprehension is proceeding apace, you can rest assured that her language development is going along just fine.
